Transportation
How to access Sendai and Tokyo from Kesennuma by means of public transportation.
JR Kesennuma Station
Local train lines in Kesennuma were devastated by the tsunami in 2011. JR services to Kesennuma have been partially restored, and the city is now served by BRT (Bus Rapit Transit) and the Ofunato Line (local train line from Kesennuma to Ichinoseki). Note that Kesennuma has no direct Shinkansen service, so if you’re planning on taking the Shinkansen to Tokyo, you have two options:
JR Kesennuma has a Midori no Madoguchi, so you can make and change reservations for Shinkansen tickets there, just like any other JR Station.
- Take the Ofunato Line to Ichinoseki Station (Iwate) and take the Shinkansen from there
- Drive to Kurikomakogen Station (Kurihara, Miyagi), park your car and get on the Shinkansen there. The parking lot in the back of the station (on the opposite side of all the paid long-term parking lots) is free!
JR Kesennuma has a Midori no Madoguchi, so you can make and change reservations for Shinkansen tickets there, just like any other JR Station.
